‘Unfrosted’ Review- A Farce Of A Pop-Tart Origin

Unfrosted is a Netflix comedy that is directed, co-written, and co-produced by Jerry Seinfeld. It recounts the tale of the Pop-Tart.

Bob Cabana (Jerry Seinfeld) works for Edsel Kellogg III (Jim Gaffigan) in developing products for Kellogg Cereal. When he discovers that competitor Marjorie Post (Amy Schumer) is making a new breakfast pastry. He recruits former rival Donna Stankowski (Melissa McCarthy) to help him develop their own. While dealing with drama from Tony The Tiger actor Thurl Ravenscroft (Hugh Grant) and a sinister milkman (Christian Slater), they assemble a team to develop what will become known as the Pop-Tart.

These “see how it happened” movies are often wrought with historical inaccuracies and modern politics. This movie manages to avoid these things and instead creates a farcical take on the story of the Pop-Tart, a breakfast treat everyone recognizes.

Seinfeld is known for his dry sense of humor and quick wit. That works well for Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, which cater to that sort of vibe. In this film, which is made colorfully and vibrantly, the humor style fell somewhat flat. To expand further, McCarthy and Senfield did not have good chemistry. Their conversations felt forced and inorganic, which stifled a lot of the humor.

I also thought the living ravioli subplot was a bit stale. It was no doubt playing off the Grogu and Groot fanfare, but here, it did not work very well.

Despite this, I did find myself laughing at several points in the movie. It takes many potshots at corporate greed, sports, the media, and even politics with Bill Burr having a cameo as JFK, but manages to avoid pandering to anything. That in itself was a relief, and despite my objections above, I did think it was a good time.

The ensemble cast made this fun, as you never knew who was going to appear on the screen next. This did add to some of the funnier moments of the story, especially when they parody real historical moments. like the Cuban Missile Crisis, to make it breakfast-related.

Bottom line, Unfrosted does have some hiccups, but I still had a fun time. It tells a farce of a story and has that signature Jerry Seinfeld style.
