‘Trigun Stampede’ Season 1 Review- Is The Remake Worth It?
This anime aired in 2023.
Trigun: Stampede is a reboot anime from the Japanese animation studio Orange and is based on the manga by Yasuhiro Nightow.
Veteran reporter Roberto De Niro (Ben Bryant) and rookie Meryl Stryfe (Sarah Roach) are looking for a story on a desolate planet that humanity fled to after a cataclysmic event on Earth as part of Project SEED. They encounter the wanted man Vash (Johnny Yong Bosch), a vigilante saving people from his evil twin brother Million Knives (David Matranga). The two are harboring a secret that can either save mankind or destroy it.
Time to address the elephant in the room. No, it is not as good as the original anime. The original version from Madhouse truly brought Nightow’s tales to life. That being said, I did enjoy this new rendition.
Normally, I am not a fan of this style of animation. I often find that studios use it to be lazy with character illustrations and backgrounds, making things feel rushed or subpar. Not so with this series. While I still prefer sharper CGI and 2-D styles, like the original anime, I still want to applaud the animators at Orange for putting out their best. They did not skimp, and you could tell.
Bosch slides right back into the role of Vash in this new dub like he never left. He definitely is the right choice for the character in the English version as he just owns the role. I applaud his work as Vash and his skills in bringing this character to life.
As for the story, it acts as a sort of prequel to the story and makes a few changes to the fates of certain characters. It takes elements from the manga, changes the fate of a few characters, and brings us a new origin for Vash. I thought it did a good job, and while it could be chaotic at times, I found myself enjoying it a great deal. I have a feeling the “final phase” will be a lot of fun.
