'This Present Darkness' Supernatural Novel Highlight
This is the first novel from Frank Peretti.
Frank Peretti redefined Christian fiction with his premier novel This Present Darkness in 1986. The story was a game-changer, providing a new standard that brought faith-based fiction into a new era of the latter part of the twenty-first century.
In the small town of Ashton, journalist Marshall Hogan begins an investigation of the strange going on in the community. Local business owners vanish only to be replaced by seemingly robotic people, all of whom are connected to the mysterious Universal Consciousness Society. Meanwhile, Pastor Hank Busche of Ashton Community Church is suspicious that something supernatural is going on as powerful influences seem to infiltrate the parish. What neither of them knows is that in the supernatural world, angels and demons are fighting for the souls of Ashton, and only through the power of God can the town come together to save their community.
Frank Peretti’s work is something to be enjoyed and also processed. Now, he will be the first to tell you that though he tries to keep this supernatural tale as Biblically based as he can, this is a work of fiction and should be viewed as such. With this in mind, it is some of the best of modern Christian fiction.
He combines elements of fantasy, horror, and suspense to bring a top-notch character study on how angels and demons operate in the background, one serving the ultimate good while the other side serves the most destructive evils. It is poignant and powerful, a strong literary read.
