This Is The Zodiac Speaking is a three-part Netflix true crime documentary series. It is directed by Phil Lott and Ari Mark. It was produced by AMPLE.
The Zodiac Killer remains one of the most sought-after unsolved true crime cases. Zodiac was a brutal murderer who targeted victims with knives, guns, and ciphers. While many suspects have been suggested, one remains constant: Arthur Leigh Allen. He always denied the accusation, but new evidence has come to light that suggests a connection between him and the Zodiac. Could this seemingly gentle giant be a serial killer?
If you even have a passing familiarity with the Zodiac Killer case, you know that every person who lived in California before the nineties claims to know who Zodiac was. However, Leigh has always been the most consistent suspect, with even Robert Graysmith, the man who wrote Zodiac and Zodiac Unmasked, suspecting him.
This docuseries interviews the Seawater family, whose matriarch was close friends with Leigh. They claim they knew the man during the Zodiac Killings and painted a picture where he certainly fits the profile.
As a true crime streaming documentary series, this had me hooked. I have heard a lot of suggestions about the identity of the Zodiac, but Leigh only occasionally gets looked at. I have heard theories about the murders being a hoax, a guy named Jim, multiple killers, and even a former journalist, Richard Gaikowski. This series ignores all of these suspects and focuses on Leigh, highlighting his connections to the slayings.
The only thing about this documentary was that it left out someone claiming to be the killer calling into a live television broadcast. I think that would have been interesting to hear the Seawater family’s perspective on it.
Personally, I do believe Leigh was the Zodiac Killer, not Senator Ted Cruz. Even without the suspicion of the Seawater family and Graysmith, his connections are undeniable. This docuseries does a good job of highlighting the evidence and the timeline.
