‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ Season 2 Part 1 TV Review- The Fifth Witness
This show aired in 2023.
The Lincoln Lawyer returns for a second season with Netflix releasing it in two parts. The first part featured five episodes and partially adapted The Fifth Witness from author and character creator Michael Connelly. Ted Humphrey returns as showrunner.
Following the acquittal of Trevor Elliott (Christopher Gorham) and despite his murder, lawyer Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) sees his practice spike as he is driven in his Lincoln by Izzy (Jazz Raycole). His paralegal, Lorna Crane (Becki Newton) finds herself busy while planning a wedding and studying for her law degree. As the wedding approaches, Cisco (Angus Sampson) finds himself drawn back to his old biker gang. Meanwhile, Mickey is again in court when DA Andy Freeman (Yaya DaCosta) targets a client. Unfortunately, his first ex-wife, Maggie McPherson (Neve Campbell), is angry at his behavior.
I really enjoy the courtroom drama that this series brings. It is very interesting to watch Mickey and his team pull all-nighters and weave the twists that come their way during a case. I once again want to praise Garcia-Ruflo as Haller. I do not read the books, so I am not comparing him that way, but I feel he is a good lead for the show.
The show’s main problem comes from the female characters. With the exception of Hayley, Haller’s daughter, played by Krista Warner, every single female character is insufferable in some way. Crane is whiny and bossy. McPherson is a self-righteous hypocrite. Even the recurring female characters found some way to be unlikable. I hate to break it to the writers, but snarky rudeness is not how strong women behave. In fact, they came off as childish. Hopefully, they will be more balanced in part two.
That being said, I still enjoyed the show. Seeing how a fictional lawyer works to get his clients off a criminal charge was very entertaining, and the cases themselves were fun. I hope for good things when it comes to the second part.
