‘The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst’ True Crime TV Review
Watch till the end.
Andrew Jarecki directs and hosts the HBO true crime documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. It explores the three murders surrounding the wealthy heir Durst.
Robert Durst is an enigmatic figure. In 1982, his wife goes missing and seemingly vanishes without a trace in New York. In 2000, his friend Susan Berman was brutally murdered in her California home. Durst is suspected, but he denies even being in the state. Texas prosecutors tried him for the murder of his neighbor Morris Black in 2001, but he was acquitted. Is he the most unlucky person in the world or is there something more sinister at work?
Jarecki previously directed a 2010 thriller All Good Things which was based on Durst’s life. Durst seemed to like the movie, so he offered interviews that are featured in all six episodes.
The showrunners did a good job of setting the timeline, asking tough questions, and interviewing others who were involved with the investigation. At times, you feel conflicted. Is Durst this stone-cold killer? Are coincidences just haunting him?
I should note that I have a personal stake in this. A relative was a prosecutor in the Texas court and I have my own opinions and I watched that trial in anticipation. For the sake of reviewing this, I will keep them to myself, but I will say I was stunned that a jury acquitted him.
Now, as you watch everything come together, you are in for the shock of your life at the conclusion of the series. You do not see it coming and when you hear it, it will change everything that you heard from the previous episodes. I highly recommend this series and that you should catch it if you get the chance.
