'Star Wars: Darth Vader Volume 1' Graphic Novel Review

This comic was released in 2015.

Written by Kieron Gillen and featuring art by Salvador Larroca, the ongoing Star Wars: Darth Vader by Marvel Comics released its first graphic novel.

Volume 1: Vader takes place between Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope and Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. It features a suspicious Vader after he encounters Luke Skywalker during another run-in with Rebel Alliance. Unaware of Luke’s identity, he begins a search for the young rebel who has his lightsaber.

Meanwhile, Emperor Palpatine places Darth Vader under an Imperial general, forcing Vader to gather a small army of his own to do his bidding.

This is a great story and an excellent addition to the Marvel and Disney canon, especially in comic book format. I feel like the writers really captured the sinister nature of Darth Vader and his growing frustration with how Emperor Palpatine is running the Empire.

Likewise, I felt the artwork captured the tone of the series and did a good job of designing Darth Vader. A lot of times, the comic book Vader can look extremely elongated with an exaggerated mask. In this series, they did their best to make him look similar to the movies and that was a bonus.
