Brought to us by writer-artist Yusuke Osawa, Spider-Man: Fake Red is a manga miniseries based on Stan Lee’s friendly neighborhood hero. It was released in 2023 through Kodansha in Japan before Marvel Comics and Viz Media brought it to the United States.
Spider-Man has not been seen in New York City for a few days, and the villains are starting to notice. However, Japanese transfer student Yu arrives in the Big Apple and is teased. However, he stumbles on the Spider-Man costume in a trash can. At first, he does not know what to do, but he decides to step in when he witnesses a crime. Now thinking he is Spider-Man, he finds himself hounded by villains. With the help of his friend Emma, he decides to step up, but is he ready for Venom?
This mangaka nails Spider-Man better than anyone on the staff at Marvel Studios today. Yes, he introduces another character to put on the webs, but wait until the end. It is a sobering story about being a hero, stepping up with courage, and honoring your heroes.
It has plenty of action to keep you interested. It has an emotional resonance you do not expect. It keeps you hooked to the end, and you will not want to put it down. I had a great time with this Spidey tale, and I stand by what I said: it is better than anything Marvel writers have put out in years.
The same is true about the artwork. Everyone looked very cool and sleek. Spider-Man, Silk, Venom, and the other characters look well in the manga style. It only added more to the vibe and made it fun. If you are looking for a new story to grab, definitely pick it up, as it reminds you that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
