‘South Park: Joining The Panderverse’ TV Review- Crass, But Good
This TV special was streamed in 2023.
South Park: Joining The Panderverse is the fifth special for the adult-oriented animated series from Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The show premiered on the Paramount Plus streaming service.
Eric Cartman (Trey Parker) keeps having nightmares that he and his friends are being replaced by diverse women of color. To everyone’s surprise, this actually happens when a black version of Eric (Janeshia Adams-Ginyard) as Stan Marsh (Trey Parker) realizes the handymen in the town are becoming rich. In the multiverse, Eric’s worst nightmare comes true when he is stalked by Disney exec Kathleen Kennedy (Kimberly Brooks), and Disney realizes the Pander Stone is creating a breach in the Panderverse.
I should say from the outset that I am only a casual viewer of South Park and not a “die-hard fan,” but this special definitely got my attention. Please note, this is not a cartoon for kids, and the humor is for mature audiences.
The creators of South Park are known to mock everyone, and here they do. Disney is mocked for pandering to the woke audience. The fans are mocked for nitpicking every single thing. I do think some of the jokes would have been funnier a year or two ago, and that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige should have been included in the mix.
That being said, in their crass way, it was pretty good. I find it interesting that the Disney shills are yelling “South Park owned the chuds” while the Fandom Menace are also declaring the victory for themselves. Perhaps that is what makes it so funny. Some have caught on and are throwing fits that the fans got mocked, but hey, it was a joke. Do not get butt-hurt about it.
Bottom line, South Park: Joining The Panderverse is a clever special that mocks everyone in the crass way Trey Parker and Matt Stone are known for. With this in mind, I think fans of the show will like it, and new ones will find it entertaining.
