A year after its release, Americans finally got access to Solo Leveling Volume 9 written by Chugong and the late great artist Dubu aka Redice Studio.
From the description,
Seeking answers, Jinwoo answers the call of the system and returns to the double dungeon that started it all. Meanwhile, after the loss of their strongest hunters, the Japanese government finds themselves struggling with a particularly nasty gate and seeks outside help. Will Jinwoo be able to stop the magic beasts before they lay waste to Japan?
I know it seems like I am repeating myself, but it is true. The artwork here is amazing Dubu was next level in how he drew the characters and the monsters. This time, we get glimpses into the past and get a taste of why Jinwoo has become so powerful. He expertly does these illustrations.
I also appreciate how the story moves forward. We see the fallout from the island raid for the nations that had sent hunters there. Japan has to deal with an incredibly deadly gate and is forced to turn to a Russian hunter who cares more about money than helping. These issues are done in a realistic, but exciting way.
That goes for Jinwoo’s arc as well. As he grows in power, he gets more detached from his humanity to the point where he catches himself not checking on his sister, who is still dealing with the attack on her school. This volume gives us insight into the source of his strength, making it an entry that you do not want to miss.
