Reaper Destroyer is the first issue from Superior Press, published after a successful crowdfunding campaign I supported. It is written and drawn by Joe M. Sontag with several guests helping with the inks.
According to the description,
In a disparate New York City, Matthew Walker wages a battle over his very identity. Locked in a struggle with an ancient spirit of death, over control of a supernatural suit of armor to which both are bound. When warring factions of immortals reveal themselves, and their intentions to claim control of the armor, Man and Spirit form an uneasy alliance.
This is an excellent supernatural action comic. I was not sure what to expect when it arrived in the mail, but when I opened it, I could not put it down. Matt is a very interesting character as the war between himself and the living armor possessing him is constantly interrupted by demonic attacks.
I also like the set-up of the main hero and the main antagonist. They are aware of one another’s existence and the comic definitely hypes you for their showdown.
Since there are so many inkers, at times, the artwork felt inconsistent. Had it been an anthology, it would have made more sense. That is not to say that the art is bad, but flipping from one inker to another in one story was hard to ignore. That being said, I understand indie creators have to utilize multiple resources to craft their projects.
My only other nitpick is I thought the armor’s inner voice was annoying. He and Matt bicker, which is normal in these sorts of “living armor” stories, but his monologue at times was a bit tiring.
I am always looking for indie treats and this is definitely one of them. Despite my few criticisms, I still think this is an excellent addition to your comic book collection, especially if you are into the supernatural action genre.
