Onyx was a comic book written by Cris Ryall with art by illustrator Gabriel Rodríguez and colorist Jay Fotos. It was released by Image Comics and Syzygy Publishing.
Traveling from deep space, the armored alien Onyx arrives on Earth in pursuit of a deadly spore that can possess all living creatures on the planet. She crosses paths with soldiers who are on a separate mission, but are relying on a psychic called Loner. They agree to work together because the spore has made its way to genetically altered and intelligent animals who plan on using the spore for their evil desires.
I purchased this one-shot at a comic book store where Jay Fotos was signing in early 2005. He was a cool guy, and I am glad I had the opportunity to speak with him.
It goes without saying that the artwork is fantastic. I especially liked the unique designs of the humanoid animals that ally with the alien spore. They were illustrated very well. That is also true of Onyx’s armor. It was sleek and cool, truly bringing out her character.
The story is also very compelling. You have so many subgenres combined. You have futuristic sci-fi, horror, creature features, and action. You would think that it would get bogged down, but it does not. You are pulled into the plot with all of its twists, turns, and terror.
There were a lot of characters to keep track of, but as long as you focused on Onyx and Loner, you would not get lost.
That being said, I had a great time. If you need a break from superheroes, find a copy of this sci-fi adventure!
