'Nacho Libre' Review- NACHO

They don't movies like this anymore.

Co-written and directed by Jared Hess, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon brings us the 2006 comedy film Nacho Libre, very loosely based on the life of Rev. Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez from Mexico. I am unfamiliar with the true story, so I will focus on the film itself.

Originally an orphan himself, Friar Ignacio (Jack Black) works at a Catholic orphanage where he cooks the meals. He receives ridicule from the other friars until Sister Encarnación (Ana de la Reguera) arrives to teach the kids. Ignacio is frustrated by the lack of funds he is given, but after he sees the luchador Ramses (Silver King), he gets an idea. Recruiting local Steven (Hector Jimenez), the two of them form the wrestling tag team Nacho Libre and Esqueleto. The two of them wrestle their way into becoming famous, but Nacho wants more. Even as orphans Juan Pablo (Moisés Arias) and Chanco (Darius Rose) start to get suspicious, Nacho desires to go pro as a fighter.

I have seen this film at least a dozen times and I love every minute of it. It is a simple comedy with a small cast, but lovable characters. You laugh at every joke and enjoy every minute of it. This is one of the finest flicks that features all kinds of fantastic scenes where the timing is right on cue.

Jack Black is brilliant as the wrestling friar. This is one of his shining moments. His portrayal is top-notch. Likewise, Hector Jimenez as his sidekick is excellent. With the two of them and the rest of the cast, you will not want to miss a single line of dialogue. Even Peter Stormare’s cameo as the “Water Gypsy” is excellent casting.

Bottom line, Nacho Libre is one of those movies that define a generation. It relies on dialogue, slapstick, and situational comedy to tell its story and you will enjoy every minute of it.
