‘My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions Volume 1’ Manga Review

This manga was released in 2021.

A spin-off from the superhero manga by Kohei Horikoshi, My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions Volume 1 is written and illustrated by Yoko Akiyama. It takes the students of Class 1-A and teams them with other schools and even pro heroes.

All-Might races to turn in papers for Deku’s participation in the team-up program, but Aizawa may be one step ahead. Ida and Momo get placed with Fat Gum and Sun Eater, leading the four heroes to help a little girl who wants to thank a hero who saved her during a villain attack. These are just some of the stories.

Told as an anthology, it was launched in 2019 by Jump Comics and is published by Viz Media in the United States. This series is going to be a great way to widen the universe of MHA and show some origins for the characters. With the other spin-off, Vigilantes, coming to an end, I am excited that a second series will help scratch that hero itch.

Akiyama truly captures the spirit of the original, both in humor and heroics. She worked as Horikoshi’s assistant for the main series, so she was perfect for the role, and she does it with ease. I enjoyed her illustrations of the characters and loved how Fat Gum was highlighted at the end. The first volume was not as good as Vigilantes, but it was good enough to get me reading, and I plan to continue it.
