'MobLand' TV Review- The UK Has More Guns Than You Think
Guy Ritchie directs the pilot.
MobLand is a British crime thriller created by Ronan Bennett. Guy Ritchie serves as a co-executive producer and director for several episodes. It was made by MTV Entertainment Studios before being streamed to Paramount Plus.
Conrad Harrigan (Pierce Brosnan) and his wife, Maeve (Helen Mirren), are the aging leaders of a mob family in the UK. When the son of gangster Richie Stevenson (Geoff Bell) goes missing, the Harrigans are blamed. It is up to their fixer, Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), to handle the problem, but it could lead to war.
I have to admit, I had a bit of trouble understanding the English dialogue sometimes. It is no wonder they say American accents are closer to Queen Victoria’s way of speaking, because I had to turn on subtitles at a few points in this show.
Also, I was not crazy about the theme song. It did not match the vibe of the series and was incredibly unpleasant. I am sure in a different context it might have worked, but it was not right for this show.
Aside from those notes, this was a pretty entertaining show. You watch as Conrad and Maeve are desperate to hold onto power, getting more volatile, and taking unnecessary risks. This leads to a lot of the incidents in the show, including some drama with the spouses.
It has a lot of twists and turns, some of which are unexpected, but they have you hooked. I have to say, this show does not glamorize the mob life. You are stunned by the lengths these killers will go to and by the consequences they experience. It pulls you in, and you better hang tight.
