'Minority Report' Review- Tom Cruise Runs Into The Future

This movie was originally released in 2002.

Steven Spielberg helmed ‘Minority Report,’ a science fiction film co-written by Scott Frank and Jon Cohen. It was released by 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Pictures.

In the year 2054, Washington DC is trying to push their “Precrime” Police Department that utilizes psychics with precognitive “Precogs” to predict murders. Chief John Anderton (Tom Cruise) works closely with Director Lamar Burgess (Max von Sydow) to implement the program, which is being pushed to go national. After Department of Justice agent Danny Witwer (Colin Farrell) arrives, he audits the program including team members Gordon “Fletch” Fletcher (Neal McDonough), Jad Watson (Steve Harris), and the Precogs caretaker Wally (Daniel London). As the audit ramps up, the strongest Precog, known as Agatha (Samantha Morton), envisions Anderton murdering a mysterious stranger, forcing him to go on the run to prove his innocence with his former allies in hot pursuit.

Based on the short story by Philip K. Dick, Spielberg does a good job of weaving this tale, balancing science fiction, action, mystery, and metaphysics all into one movie. It is one that only someone with his talent could pull off and he did. Not once did I feel lost or confused by the events or subject matter in the film.

Now, the special effects are a bit dated, but the action and the story keep you hooked. It is compelling and Tom Cruise does an excellent job of moving it forward in his role. He delivers as the film’s star on every level and keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

Of course, John William’s score is impressive. I still think his music for The Empire Strikes Back, The Cowboys, and The Towering Inferno is better, but it was still done with his usual excellence.

Bottom line, Minority Report works on all levels as a sci-fi action flick with a compelling story and Tom Cruise wrapping it all together with an amazing performance.
