‘Megamind Vs. The Doom Syndicate’ Review- A Disappointing Sequel
This film streamed in 2024.
Megamind Vs. The Doom Syndicate is an animated superhero sequel directed by Eric Fogel. It was developed by DreamWorks Animation and released on the Peacock streaming service.
Two days after former villain Megamind (Keith Ferguson) saved Metro City, he and his minion Chum (Josh Brener) are heroes. The two have a falling out, and Chum decides to leave, feeling unappreciated. After meeting fangirl Keiko Morita (Maya Aoki Tuttle), Megamind is shocked when his former villain teammates, The Doom Syndicate, arrive. Lady Doppler (Emily Tunon), Pierre Pressure (Scott Adsit), Lord Nighty-Knight (Talon Warburton), and Behemoth (Chris Sullivan) are all convinced that Megamind is tricking Metro City and wants to join him. With reporter Roxanne Ritchi’s (Laura Post) help, he devises a plan, but will they catch on?
Meh. While Megamind was a movie written for parents who read comics and their kids, this one is just for kids. Nothing wrong with that had it been a standalone animated feature, but because it is connected to its predecessor, it felt like a disappointment.
Now, the kids might enjoy it. It does have a decent amount of good comedy, and it tries to stay true to its roots. It has a lot of cartoonish hijinks and colorful characters to keep them entertained. There was also no hidden agenda or identity politics, which was refreshing.
That being said, you still felt like it was a downgrade. The animation is not as sharp or sleek, the replacement voice cast is not as memorable, and the plot is mediocre.
Of course, with the release of the television spin-off Megamind Rules, this is more of the pilot for that show, instead of an epic sequel to an epic superhero flick. Perhaps that is why the plot and the animation did not have the thought that went into the first one. I mean, Behemoth just looks awful, like a burnt pizza crust instead of the monster he was meant to be.
As I stated above, I was not impressed with the replacement cast. They are talented, sure, but the first movie felt like everyone was handpicked to match the heroes and villains they were satirizing. This cast felt more like they were just trying to step into some pretty good shoes, and they are not quite fitting. Again, had it been a standalone film, the cast could have worked, but that is not the case.
Bottom line, Megamind Vs. the Doom Syndicate is a disappointing sequel to an epic animated film. The kids might have fun with all of the hijinks, but fans of the predecessor will not enjoy it one bit.
