If you are looking for a good read this holiday season, my pal and fellow novelist, Lou Aguilar, brought us a new novella just in time for some Yuletide cheer, The Christmas Spirit. It is a solid seasonal drama with a touch of the supernatural and the paranormal.
From the summary,
A jaded women’s magazine writer becomes obsessed with the dynamic lighthouse keeper who rescued her at sea just before Christmas then mysteriously vanished. She sets out to write a story on him, much to her rich fiancé’s displeasure and the Coast Guard’s discouragement. The deeper she delves into the mystery, the more she uncovers a romantic Christmas magic she never imagined but will take all her courage to embrace.
I enjoyed this story a great deal. It is a fun Christmas-time novella featuring good characters trying to navigate their lives during the holidays. It has romance, mystery, and takes a good look at the things that make up our lives. I also enjoyed the characters. They are not the cardboard cutouts we see in modern literature or the films. They are relatable and endearing.
Without giving too much away, I liked his message of not settling or compromising on your life. That is a very timely message for the year it came out, this year, and beyond.
Christmas is usually when we evaluate our lives as the year comes to a close, and Lou gives a good read to provide a break from the nonstop craziness that came at us this year.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments below. Tell me if there is a comic book, movie, anime, or novel you would like me to review.
