Studio Baba and Iconic Comics released Kindred Heavens Book Two. It was written by Bryce Beal and drawn by Scott Malin, who successfully spearheaded a crowdfunding campaign.
When the press gets wind of the Pegasus and Cerebrus brawl, Pegasus founder Carl Voit goes rogue, wanting to secure more funds for his wind racing team. His ace pilot and son, Felix Voit, quits, leaving Pegasus behind, but Carl still refuses to promote his daughter Isabelle. However, he tells her to get training from his former partner, Heiner Rehder, but the journey proves to be adventurous. Carl has to humble himself to win the trust back of his team.
I applaud the artwork from Malin. He does a good job of making it feel like a nineties manga or anime. I liked that retro vibe that it had, it brought out the adventurous nature of the plot.
Speaking of the plot, it was just as exciting as the first book. I love Isabelle’s arc as she tries to get her father to pay attention. It takes Carl losing his son, his team, his allies, and finally his daughter for him to realize Pegasus has to change. These two plots meld together as we watch Isabelle search for someone who can teach her.
Isabelle is a well-crafted antagonist. If you have a teen who likes to read about adventure, invention, and growing in their talent, I highly recommend this one.
I enjoy these steampunk-themed stories about coming together to win. It is light-hearted, but never boring. The characters are relatable, but also people you can cheer for. It made for a good story to sit down and read. I look forward to the next book.
