Kindred Heavens is a graphic novel written by Bryce Beal and drawn by Scott Malin. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, Studio Baba and Iconic Comics released it. The story is set in an alternative steampunk 1920s.
Isabelle Voit is the teen daughter of Carl Voit, the head of the Windracing sports team Pegasus. She works as a mechanic for her father’s team, but dreams of being a pilot like her mother. Her father is against it, but with the encouragement of her boyfriend Robin, she aims to go higher. Time is running out as their rivals, Team Cerebus, are preparing for an upcoming champion race.
The artwork reminds me of the illustrations of Studio Ghibli. It was very well done, and I applaud their efforts. I found that it popped excellently and had a wholesome feel to it. I especially liked the designs of the planes. They had a retro feel to them, reminiscent of the Wright Brothers. It worked well for the plot, especially how unique the character designs were.
The world building here is also top-notch. Though it does take place in the real world, it has a steampunk feel to it. Races based in Wright Brothers plane designs work well and definitely make for a good tone.
I also enjoyed the story a great deal. I love the tales of an underdog who wants to prove himself or herself.
What is more interesting is the rival that Isabelle has to stand up to. Since she is not able to compete in the race, she has to compete with her father’s stubbornness. It made for an interesting change of pace within indie comics.
Essentially, this is a heartwarming saga about a daughter who wants to prove herself to a father who is not interested in seeing her talent. It is a compelling story with lots of drama and racing. I think you will enjoy it.
