Irish Wish is a romantic comedy directed by Janeen Damian and written by Kirsten Hansen. It had a limited theatrical run before being streamed to Netflix.
Book editor Maddie Kelly (Lindsay Lohan) is in love with her client, Irish novelist Paul Kennedy (Alexander Vlahos), though her friend Heather (Ayesha Curry) notes she wrote Paul’s latest book. Maddie’s mother, Rosemary (Jane Seymour), insists that her daughter tell Paul, but he is introduced to Emma (Elizabeth Tan), whom he later proposes to. Maddie is still in love with Paul, but bumps into British photographer James Thomas (Ed Speleers) on her way to the airport. While visiting some Ireland scenes, she makes a wish only to be visited by the spirit of Saint Brigid (Dawn Bradfield), who alters time to make it where she is marrying Paul. As the wedding day approaches, she meets James again and wonders if fate has other plans.
I might be in the minority, but I am enjoying Lindsay Lohan’s renaissance as a rom-com star. She went through so many phases, some better than others, but this one seems to be her sweet spot.
Now, by no means is this a perfect movie. It is very cheesy and has that sort of early two-thousands rom-com feel, and hits every trope with the “wrong guy” subgenre. It is very typical, so it really had no surprises or unexpected twists. Not to mention, Jane Seymour is very underused. She is a powerhouse actress, but she only had a small role in this one. I would have liked to see more of her.
That being said, I enjoyed this movie. It brought some genuine laughs with its humor and I found the story to be enduring. It is a plot about a woman who wants something she seemingly cannot have, but then gets the opportunity, only to wonder if that is what she truly wants. I found that interesting.
It would be remiss of me if I did not mention how the cinematography captured the captivating Ireland landscape, one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Lohan also had really good chemistry with co-star James Thomas. They had some good conversational moments, and you felt connected to their budding romance. With this, you did feel connected to the movie.
Bottom line, Irish Wish is a cheesy, but pleasant film to watch. Lohan does an amazing job with the role and bringing us to the Irish outdoors.
PARENTAL CONCERNS: Some innuendo, Some violence
