'Hot Fuzz' Review- Small Town Corruption Comedy

This movie was released in 2007.

Comedy duo team director Edgar Wright teams up with actor Simon Pegg once again for 2007’s Hot Fuzz, the second installment in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. Taking a break from zombie films, it then flips to action comedy.

London Metropolitan Police Service PC Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is an exemplary member of law enforcement with several accommodations for his duty to the community. However, on the day of his promotion to Sergeant, he is transferred by his jealous colleagues to the village of Sandford, Gloucestershire, a sleepy town with virtually no crime. He is partnered with his new superior Inspector Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent)’s son Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), who dreams of becoming an action-film policeman. The rest of the town’s police unit seems ineffective and disinterested in the lives of the tiny community.

However, a series of bizarre accidents start to plague the town after a local performance of Romeo and Juliet. Sergeant Angel thinks they are murderers, but he is having trouble finding anyone who will believe him even as the bodies continue to pile up.

Once again. Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg prove that they can make anyone laugh with their outlandish take on everyday life. While I did not enjoy this one as much as their previous collaborations, I did find it hilariously funny. Frost and Pegg have excellent chemistry as sidekicks.

I also want to praise Timothy Dalton, who plays local grocery owner Simon Skinner. Dalton is a brilliant and underrated actor who has proven his chops in both the dramatic and suspenseful, now in a comedy.

Bottom line, Hot Fuzz is an enjoyable parody of buddy-cop films that does not attempt to trick you or make you think it is something it is not. It is genuinely funny with lots of action and comedic timing.
