‘His Three Daughters’ Review- A Story About A Complicated Family
This film streamed in 2024.
His Three Daughters is a drama film directed, written, and co-produced by Azazel Jacobs. It debuted at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and premiered on Netflix in 2024.
Sisters Katie (Carrie Coon) and Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) arrive at their dying father Vincent’s (Jay O. Sanders) New York City apartment where their step-sister Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) has been living. As his condition worsens, they are kept up-to-date by hospice nurse Angel (Rudy Galvan), who is preparing them for the end. Tensions begin rising between the three of them as they start to mistrust one another, and old wounds reveal themselves.
This movie explores grief, or more accurately, the preparation for it. As they await the death of their father, there is strife between them. You see how tensions can build with people of differing opinions who all see their relationship from their own point of view. It builds a plot that pulls you in and lets you explore everyone from every angle.
The three cast members do an excellent job. I think it is kind of cool that each of them has starred in Marvel films. Olsen was Scarlet Witch, Coons was Proxima Midnight, and Lyonne appeared as Sommerfield. Each one was able to separate themselves and give excellent dramatic performances as these estranged sisters.
Olsen portrays the new mom who is trying to hold everyone together. Coons is the one who feels she has stepped into the role of the mother hen who feels she has to control everything. Lyonne is the carefree one who feels isolated from her sisters since she is a stepsister. They all have their own feelings on how to deal with the circumstances they are in.
It is an intense and poignant tale about a family that has been through so much and must learn from the past so that they can prepare for the sadness to come. We see the sadness, the grief, and ultimately the joy of being a family.
Jacobs did a good job of telling this story. He crafts his tale masterfully, pulling you into the story with ease. I cannot complain about the story one bit or how it all came together. He avoided any sort of political entanglements and just told a human story. We need more films like this coming from Hollywood.
Bottom line, His Three Daughters is a dramatic family drama that shows how grief can cause strife and pain, but also bring people together.
