‘Fear Of Rain’ Review- Decent Thriller, But Wobbles At Times
This film was released in 2021.
Fear of Rain is a psychological thriller from Zero Gravity Management that is written and directed by Castille Landon. It was distributed by Lionsgate.
Rain Burroughs (Madison Iseman) is a high school senior recovering from a mental breakdown. She arrives back at her home where her father John (Harry Connick Jr.) is still repairing her room after she trashed it. Her mother Michelle (Katherine Heigl) is apologetic for what happened but encourages Rain to return to school despite her having hallucinations and hearing voices. She befriends new student Caleb (Israel Broussard), though she wonders if he is from her imagination. One night, she spots her neighbor and English teacher Dani McConnell (Eugenie Bondurant), seemingly choking a child. Though Rain is convinced the child is real and that Dani is hiding her, everyone doubts her story due to her mental health.
The movie has a decent plot, interesting characters, and plenty of thrills. It definitely keeps you on your toes as we follow Rain’s journey from fear. Most films, when dealing with mental health, either exaggerate the condition or exploit it for drama. The plot avoids exploitation, but it does avoid detailing exactly what condition Rain suffers from. I’m sure the vague diagnosis was so they could tap into things apart from a specific diagnosis. However, it does a good job of showing the pain, social stigma, and downright torment those suffering from mental anguish go through.
Like I mentioned previously, the movie does offer genuine thrills and asking questions that you want to be answered. There are does where the movie does wobble so it can throw in some teenaged angst that slows down the plot. It does not derail the plot, but you do feel the brakes just a bit.
As for the actors, I can safely report that they all do a decent job. Iseman is good as the lead with Heigl and Connick who also turn out a decent performance as the parents.
Bottom line, Fear Of Rain is a decent thriller that does have a few weaknesses.
