‘Dangerous Lies’ Review- Not A Bit Thrilling

Made by Off Camera Entertainment, Dangerous Lies is directed by Michael Scott from a screenplay by David Golden. It was released worldwide through Netflix as an exclusive of the streaming service.
Katie (Camila Mendes) and her husband Adam (Jessie T. Usher) are deep in debt due to college loans and barely getting by even with Katie’s employment as a caretaker for wealthy Chicago recluse Leonard Wellesley (Elliott Gould). After opening up to Leonard about their troubles, the old man hires Adam to do gardening. Soon after, Leonard passes away and to Katie’s surprise, his lawyer Julia Byron-Kim (Jamie Chung) announces that she is the beneficiary of his fortune and home.
At first, the couple enjoy their new lives, but they are plagued by visits from persistent real estate again Mickey Hayden (Cam Gigandet) and a suspicious police detective named Chesler (Sasha Alexander). What’s worse, as strange incidents happen in the house after they move in, Katie and Adam begin to mistrust each other.
I would like to give kudos to Camila Mendes and Jessie T. Usher. They are the best actors in this film, doing an excellent job with the roles they were given. Everyone, including veteran actor Elliott Gould was not given enough screen time or clever writing to establish themselves or have a moment to shine.
With this in mind, I have to admit that this movie did not impress me. It lacked certain tones, themes, and elements that bring together a good thriller. It was also incredibly predictable. The film tried to implement twists to make it less so, but it ultimately failed in that endeavor. The twists did not necessarily hamper the story, but they did nothing to enhance it.
Bottom line, Dangerous Lies lacked any of the elements that make a thriller interesting, so it was very predictable. Now, the performances were okay and the film moved along at a decent pace, but it provides nothing original.
