Chasing Angels is the next part in the prequel series from Stryde Comics. It is written by Thomas Retke and drawn by Pradeepi Sethi.
After being released from prison, Matthew tries to get his life in order and proposes to his girlfriend Tessa. The past soon catches up with him when he and Tessa are captured by a gangster called Marrow. The thug wants Matthew to eliminate Denver crime lord Uncle Joey. Taking on the name Wildcard, Matthew heads to the target’s house and, with the help of another hitman called Angelo, he infiltrates the mansion.
Stryde is one of my favorite indie comic book series, so getting to know his mentor, Cobalt, this time. It seems Matthew always gets himself into trouble, but this time, a loved one is involved.
I had a good time with this story. Cobalt is a cool character, so it was exciting to be able to explore his motivations and past. His persona as Wildcard represents who he was, and this deadly encounter with thugs shows how he evolved as a person and crimefighter.
It would be remiss of me if I did not mention the cover art by Sethi (seen above). This was very impressive and immediately made me want to pick it up to read it. It was very impressive and shows why indie comics are where it is at.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments below. Tell me if there is a comic book, movie, or anime you would like me to review.
