‘Cat And Dog’ Review- One Of The Most Dullest Comedies I’ve Seen
This film was released in 2024.
Cat And Dog is a French Canadian comedy directed by Reem Kherici who co-wrote the screenplay with Tristan Schulmann. It utilizes a combination of live action and CGI plus talking animals that humans cannot understand.
Jack (Franck Dubosc) is a thief who stole a priceless ruby, but as he makes his escape from Brandt (Philippe Lacheau), a dog he calls Buddy (Artus) swallows it. Disguising himself as a blind man, Jack runs into Monica (Reem Kherici). She is a social media influencer and the owner of celebrity cat Diva (Inès Reg). After a misunderstanding, they are separated from their pets, who head to New York City. Fortunately, Monica can track them with her collar, but Brandt is in hot pursuit.
The actors did what they could. While no one has a standout performance, they all put their best foot forward with the material they were given. Believe me when I say, they did not have a lot to work with.
First of all, there is no plot. The movie feels like a lot of rejected skit ideas that were thrown together to try to make a cohesive story. They fail brilliantly. Sure, the pets and their humans have a goal, but that is about it. Not to mention, the destination seems to get less and less important as the movie continues. It is boring and dull. Even though the runtime is not expansive, it still feels laborious to get through.
One of the reasons it feels like a chore instead of a plot is the comedy falls flat on every level. None of the jokes landed and I did not laugh once. I did find myself cringing and rolling my eyes, but this one did not even get a smile much less a chuckle or hearty laugh. The film’s predictability did not help this. I guessed every single moment and not even plot twists could save it. Not even the modern social media angle managed to make the movie better.
The CGI is also not so special. I do not blame the animators, they were just going with what they were given, similar to the actors. Real talk though, I have seen nineties movies with better animation crossover than this one. It is such a shame because it could have been so much better. This only hindered it even further.
Bottom line, Cat And Dog is one of the dullest comedies I have had the displeasure to sit through. Despite the best effort by the actors, it was one epic fail of a film.
