'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Review- The Perfect Sequel
This movie was originally released in 2014.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the ninth entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and has an ensemble cast that brings us some fan favorites and some new ones.
Taken place two years after Marvel’s The Avengers, the story goes that Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is trying to adjust to modern life and even get to know his neighbor Sharon (Emily VanCamp). However, Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) has discovered a conspiracy within SHIELD led by official Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford). He is mortally wounded by the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and gives a clue to Captain America, who turns to the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Sam Wilson aka The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) for help.
What they discover is, that it is worse than Fury thought. SHIELD has been compromised thanks to the recreated HYDRA. The trio goes in search of the truth, but soon they find that the truth may have far more consequences than they first thought and that the Winter Soldier has a connection to Rogers bigger than first suspected.
I just want to say, I loved this film. While I enjoyed Captain America: The First Avenger, this film brought to light a man who is out of time and the challenges that lie within it, especially when discovering that secrets cannot be kept from the public forever. It is a great film about privacy, freedom, and doing the right thing. I want to praise the directors for their fine crafting of this plot and narrative that pushes the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a bold new direction.
It does have a darker tone, but I did not feel that it subverted my expectations and instead blew my expectations out of the water. It has so many facets to it, but you still do not get lost. It stays focused on Steve Rogers and his role in bringing down a grand conspiracy. It essentially took what was good about the original and expanded it further. Plus, it introduced newcomers like Falcon and Winter Soldier with no issue.
Bottom line, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one great film. It is one of the best in the MCU, but just as a movie, it is a cinematic achievement that every person can enjoy. Sure, it will get ignored by film snobs on social media and gatekeepers in Hollywood, but it deserves more.
