This graphic novel collects the first four issues of the Boom Studios comic book title BRZRKR. It is an action-packed series from actor Keanu Reeves, writer Matt Kindt, and artist Ron Garney. The comic was first announced in a crowdfunding campaign that was highly successful.
A mysterious warrior known only as the Berzerker works for the US government, doing black-ops missions. Scientists are trying to unlock his immortality, which he does so willingly as he wishes for a “cure.” A military doctor connects with him and helps him unlock memories of his early years and how he used his powers in ancient times to help his father grow an empire.
Remember, this comic book is for a mature audience, so observe the rating. It is gory with a tone of violence and brutal death. Do not think it is for kids.
Ron Garney illustrates all of the action with ease. He does a good job with the character designs and shows the carnage with perfection. Garney illustrates all of the character designs with excellence, especially the Berzerker. I particularly liked the flashback sequences where we see ancient times and a clan desperate for survival. His talent brings this to life.
The story moves at a good, albeit brutal, pace with Kindt and Reeves bringing it all together. It is thrilling and entertaining. At first, you are lured in by the story of the Berserker and how strong he is as a fighter. From there, we learn that he is ancient and he only desires to be a normal human.
This builds up the tension between him and his handlers as they see him as a weapon, but he wants to simply be human. It is exciting, and this was a great opening to the series.
