From DC Comics Elseworlds comes Batman: KnightGallery. With an army of various writers, the 1995 story tells of archaeologists finding Bruce Wayne’s various ideas for protecting Gotham City.
Long after Batman’s crusade ended, a group of archaeologists discovered Wayne Manor and Bruce Wayne’s costume drawings for himself, Robin, and even designs for the Batmobile. Through the Dark Knight’s words, we discover why he chose the costumes he did for the Batman and his thoughts on preserving Wayne Manor.
I am puzzled why this is from an Elseworld. With a little bit of tweaking with the dialogue, DC Comics could have published this as a standalone special. It could have been simply a diary of Wayne’s as he navigates the complexity of designing a suit to scare criminals. That being said, I still enjoyed reading a first-person narrative from that perspective.
The writing is good and showcases how many talented writers there are at DC. Not to mention, the nineties writers truly knew about Batman and how to tell his story. They clearly had a grasp on the character, bringing him to life in a way only they knew how.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the artwork. All of the costumes were well-designed and got progressively more and more grandiose. Bruce seems to admit this in his notes which only adds to the depth of the diary.
Essentially, this was a nice throwback to the better days of DC Comics where fans could enjoy titles like this.
