An Open Secret is a true crime documentary directed by Amy J. Berg. It had its debut at the Doc NYC film festival in 2014 and debuted in cinemas in 2015. It was produced by Gabe Hoffman and Matthew Valentinas.
Through five former child stars, we hear how Hollywood producers, directors, and writers abused them. While Nickelodeon staffer Brian Peck is mentioned among others, it primarily focuses on entertainment company Digital Entertainment Network and one of their founders, Marc Collins-Rector. We also hear from journalists, parents, and industry insiders on why this problem is so pervasive.
This documentary is chilling. Hollywood produces some amazing cinematic art, but with this, we hear the dark side of the entertainment industry. It was compelling to hear from the victims and how they courageous they were in stepping forward. They do not just make accusations, they provide evidence and even recordings of their abusers bragging, openly, about the abuse they perpetuated.
The most disturbing aspect is, that even after all of this came out, the guilds have done nothing to protect the children. Sure, they changed a few rules here and there, but Hollywood is designed to protect predators who make them money. It is so sad to hear these tales of woe and you hope that the victims gain some sense of justice.
Probably, the most impactful scene is when one of the victims calls an abuser on camera and, with very little prodding, gets him to admit what a scumbag he is. It was sobering and shocking. I hope that guy, a SAG rep no less, gets recompense for the horrors he inflicted on children.
It is a shame that this documentary is not making the rounds more. Hollywood protects itself, and it is doing everything it can to cover this up. With its interviews and analysis, we hear how these victims were harmed and I hope that justice will be served.
