‘Agua Donkeys’ Review – A Muted, But Often Funny Comedy
This film was compiled in 2024.
Agua Donkeys was first introduced in 2018 as a comedy miniseries from Funny Or Die and would later be released on the now-defunct Quibi. In 2024, it was released as a feature-length film by Blaze Media. It is directed by MP Cunningham, co-written with Jer Jackson.
MP (MP Cunningham) and Jer (Jer Jackson) are two slacker pool cleaners who find out that their co-worker and crush, Jackie (Baby Darrington), has broken up with her boyfriend. However, their boss, Rod (Luke Jackson), enforces a policy about co-workers not dating. MP and Jer seek the advice of the swimming pool supply store owner Leonard (Raymond Kelleher), who tells them to do something grand. MP and Jer decide to jump off the roof of the local motel into a swimming pool to beat a previously established record. To train, they ask local hero Donnie (Joey Gibson) for pointers, but it seems that Jackie does not even notice that they exist.
This movie is reminiscent of the sort of muted comedies like Napoleon Dynamite that came out in the early 2000s. Despite its short runtime, it did feel like the pace was a little slow. At times, you were waiting for the joke or scene to land.
That being said, I thought this movie was freaking hilarious. The cleverness is in the one-liners and the understated antics that take place throughout the film. I laughed at several points throughout the film as MP and Jer try their darndest to win the heart of Jackie, despite numerous setbacks.
This dry sense of humor may not be for everyone, but I think it has major audience appeal for anyone who decides to stream it.
One scene, in particular, saw Jer and MP face temptation from a mother and daughter who seem to take an interest in the pool cleaners. They try and fail to scare the two away by mispronouncing the word “plant,” but this backfires. I had a lot of fun with this sequence and thought all of the actors did a fantastic job, including with the conclusion of this brief arc.
The writing is very clever. I have not had so many laughs in a movie in a while. Cunningham and Jackson clearly wanted the audience to have a good time. In my opinion, they succeeded in this endeavor, as I was very amused and enjoyed watching the plot unfold.
Bottom line, Agau Donkies is very funny. I had such a good time watching this muted comedy and highly recommend you give it a try. I doubt you will be disappointed.
