Agent Recon is a sci-fi action flick directed, written, and co-produced by Derek Ting. It sees the return of action star Chuck Norris to a feature-length film after over a decade.
After an alien invasion, humanity is exposed to “ash,” a chemical that turns them into zombie cannon fodder. Jim Yung (Derek Ting) was exposed to ash, but it gave him abilities that he can channel through “mana.” Now serving in the Earth military, he and his CO, Tanya (Sylvia Kwan), are embedded in a recon unit led by Colonel Green (Marc Singer). The unit has an Android (Chuck Norris) that they use to upload the digitized memories of Jim’s mentor, Captain Alastair. This data reveals that an alien called Alpha (Christopher Showerman) has kidnapped Captain Lila Rupert, a scientist whose knowledge could help the invaders take over Earth.
The movie is a sequel to Ting’s previous works Agent and Agent Revelation. Unfortunately, those flew under my radar, so I was unaware that this was the third film in a trilogy. That being said, it does a good job of giving you a summation at the beginning so you have a general sense of the world you are in.
I will say it was a bit dull at times. It felt like they prolonged certain filler scenes to pad the runtime. Every action flick needs that ninety-minute sweet spot, right? Also, out of Jim and Green, you do not really get to know any of the characters, but their backstories could have been in a previous flick. The aliens and their zombie hordes have a weakness in the liver, so I was curious why they did not have armor to protect that part of their body.
Now, that does not mean the movie was terrible. It was not. It had some flaws, but I still found myself getting into the story. It kept things tight and focused on Jim’s desire to stop Alpha, plus dealing with his growing abilities. I appreciated it and thought it had a lot of creativity behind it.
Now, the major problem with this movie is that it needed more Chuck Norris. He is there to dispense wisdom as Captain Alastair, and then has one battle at the end. Why? I know the action star is in a semi-retirement right now, but… You have Chuck Norris. Who decided he would get such a small role?
Bottom line, Agent Recon is a passable action flick, but it needed more Chuck Norris.
