65 is a sci-fi film directed and written by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. It was co-produced by Sam Raimi and released through Columbia Pictures.
Mills (Adam Driver) is a pilot who convinces his wife Alya (Nika King) and his daughter Nevine (Chloe Coleman) that he has to go on a two-year mission to find a cure for his child’s illness. During the trip, the ship he is piloting is struck by a mysterious asteroid that causes him to crash on a prehistoric Earth. He discovers a child named Koa (Ariana Greenblatt) who does not speak English. They have to traverse a deadly trail to the only functioning escape pod that is surrounded by deadly dinosaurs.
While the movie offers nothing new to its genre, I found it very entertaining. The special effects were well done, the story was solid, and the characters were engaging. It is definitely a good weekend popcorn movie if you want some interesting characters and some dinosaur action.
Adam Driver does a good job in the role. While his character is Stoic, I found him and his motivations to be strong. He does a lot of growing in the movie, and I liked his trajectory. He is leading man material, and I hope he can get better roles down the road.
Likewise, I thought Arianna Greenblatt did a good job. She acts well as a child in a terrifying position, and while the movie did give her some shining moments, it was never outlandish and was engaging. You can say the same for the rest of the film’s small cast. Everyone did an excellent job with the role they were given.
If I could offer one thought of improvement, I wish that it would have given a little bit more time with Mills’ family. While the film did try to connect them with the audience, I do think it needed a bit more time so we could understand them a bit more. This is a minor detail, but one that I think needs to be addressed.
Outside of that, I think anyone who likes a solid sci-fi thriller with dinosaurs mixed in are going to have a good time with this movie. You cannot go wrong with these kinds of movies as they are fun and are clearly made to help the audience have a good time.
Bottom line, 65 is a solid science fiction thriller that has good acting, interesting characters, and a lot of dinosaur action to keep you entertained.
